ChatGPT doubled its weekly active users in under 6 months, thanks to new releases
OpenAI’s flagship Ai Chatbot, Chatgpt, returned to solid growth in the second half of 2024, according to a new report published On Thursday by VC company Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z). Although it chatgpt nine months to grow from 100 million weekly active users in November 2023 to 200 million in August 2024, it has now taken less than six months before the app doubled those figures again, the report showed.
Shortly after the release of November 2022 as a research example, chatgpt the Fastest app ever to reach 100 million monthly active users – a milestone that struck it in just two months.
By November 2023, Chatgpt had reached another milestone of 100 million weekly active users, who up to 300 million By December 2024, then 400 million in February 2025.
According to A16Z, the initial consumer question to Chatgpt was more driven by novelty. That is, consumers were interested in trying out the app, but were not necessarily sure how it would fit into their daily lives.
The more recent growth of Chatgpt, however, is the heels of the release of new models and functionality, including the launch of GPT-4O, which has added multimodal possibilities. Shortly after the launch of that model, Chatgpt -use was from April to May 2024.
Later, after the arrival of the advanced speech mode, the use grew again from July to August 2024. The O1 model series led to more use in September to October 2024.
The growth of Chatgpt has been more consistent on Mobile, the company notes.
In the past year, users of the Chatgpt Mobile app have increased by 5% every month to 15%, with 175 million from ChatGPTs a total of 400 million weekly active users who now have access to the app on mobile devices.
The report also investigates the impact rivals as Deepseek has had on the market. The app rose to number 2 in just 10 days and reached number 2 on mobile in February, with 15% of the Chatgpt mobile user base.
On mobile users, Deepseek -users are even slightly more involved than parxity and claude users, according to data from Sensor Tower of the mobile intelligence provider. However, it is still lagging behind at Chatgpt in this area.
Other findings in the new market analysis include recommendations for AI developers and codingers, rankings of the best AI apps per category and income, and rankings of the top Gen AI apps in mobile and web.
At the last minute, ChatGPT comes in at number 1 due to unique monthly visits on the internet and monthly active users on Mobile, noted the report, with reference to data from Market Intelligence Provider Squareweb.
