Cancun deploys more than 7,000 police stations to protect tourists
Cancun enters the 2025-2026 high season under an unprecedented security operation, with Quintana Roo authorities about 7,000 police officers in the main tourist zones of the state. The measure is intended to boost tourist confidence during one of the busiest travel periods in the Caribbean.
According to a new report in ReporterThe deployment includes municipal police, state troops, the National Guard and specialized tourist units. Patrols are now concentrated all around Cancun’s hotel zone, beaches, entertainment districts and transportation hubsincluding the airport and bus terminals.
Security officials say the intensified presence is intended to protect both locals and the millions of visitors expected in the coming weeks. A senior state spokesperson emphasized this Reporter that the authorities are committed to a safer experience during peak hours: “This is a coordinated effort to ensure that every tourist feels safe. The aim is to ensure tranquility during the holiday season.”
The strategy follows a year of increased global attention to security in Mexico’s major resort areas. Although Cancun remains one of the most visited destinations in the world, even isolated incidents tend to raise international concern, prompting authorities to invest heavily in preventative measures.
Local hotel associations have welcomed the increased patrols, noting that demand remains strong with occupancy rates expected to exceed 85% in December and early January. Tourism analysts say the operation could also help counter recurring narratives about safety by providing visible reassurance on the ground.
The commitment extends to nearby destinations including Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Tulumwho are also expecting record numbers of visitors, driven in part by expanded flight schedules and the opening of new luxury resorts.
With the winter season officially underway, Cancun is betting that strong safety visibility will cement its reputation as the region’s most reliable sun and beach resort.
