Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom Talk ‘Deep Cover’ at SXSW London

Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed brought their crime comedy Caper “Deep Cover” to life through real friendship and partnership improvement, the trio revealed on Wednesday evening during a post-screening Q&A after the world premiere of the film as the center of SXSW London.
The action comedy, directed by “Stath Lays Flats” Helmer Tom Kingsley and produced by Colin Trevorrow through his Metronome Film Co., follows three improvisation actors recruited by an undercover agent to infiltrate the criminal underworld by dangerous gangsters.
“Deep Cover” had its world premiere as the center of the inaugural SXSW London Screen Festival -headliner, with the film that streamed on Prime Video from 12 June.
Trevorrow revealed the unusual Genesis of the project and explained that the concept started in 2010 when he and Co-writer Derek Connolly heard about the New York City police using actors such as Lokvogels. The film is based on an original script from employee of “Jurassic World” Connolly and Trevorrow, with the British improvisation -Duo Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen the script in London.
Director Kingsley described how the project evolved from his comic roots. “I think it might be more like a comedy. Directly, while we went on, larger and larger stars came to us,” he said, and noted that increased ambition and financing allowed more extensive action scenes.
According to Howard, the chemistry on the screen between the three leads stems from a real connection. “I mean, to be honest, it’s the nature of the script and the atmosphere … And we can all really get along,” she explained. “I think we are all kind of similar stages in our lives, and we have children, and so we make contact about that.”
For Bloom, mainly known for dramatic and action roles instead of comedy, the experience represented new territory. “I am not known for comedy,” he acknowledged, as he praised the supporting writing and the direction that helped him find the humor through the seriousness of his character.
Mohammed, the most comedy experiences of the trio through his work on ‘Ted Lasso’, was in unknown action area. “Overwhelming. I mean, I am such a fan of action films and large blockbuster -hits,” he said about working with “Hollywood -certified movie stars.”
The film was produced completely independently in London, a point of pride for the filmmakers. “It’s not easy. We are at a time when financing films, it’s more difficult and harder,” explained Trevorrow, explained the distribution partner of Amazon and the dedication of the British film team for making the ambitious project with a competition budget.
“I have been very lucky to work with British film teams for many years,” Trevorrow added and gratefully expressed the local film community for welcoming production.
Kingsley emphasized the importance of authentic London locations for the grounding of the comedy in reality. “We wanted the film to really feel. I think the comedy is funny if you really believe in the bet,” he said, describing how they filmed from Shoreditch to barking instead of studio sets at real locations.
“We need London to look like a bit dangerous, not too much postcard,” the director explained, and noted that some nights in industrial areas needed extra security precursors for the cast.
Although it was a film about improvisation, production was strongly based on the script. “It is a very tightly worked out, as if it is going a mile per minute – it is really complicated,” Kingsley noted that although improvisation took place on the set, much of them did not make the final cut due to pacing problems.
Howard praised the collaboration process: “We were never treated like dolls … It was a very partnership, organic process. And so improvisation was used as a way for us to get some kind of in the scene.”
Trevorrow closed the evening by thinking about the rarity of comedy in theaters. “We live in a day and age in which we rarely see comedy in a theater, a full of theater full of people who laugh -something I always loved when I was a child,” he said. “This film will be on Amazon, and we are so grateful for that, but tonight is very special.
The cast also includes British icons paddy considine, Ian McShane and Sean Bean.
