Brazilian airline GOL announces direct Rio-New York route and expands international operations | News

In a milestone for Brazilian aviation, GOL Linhas Aéreas has officially announced the launch of its first-ever long-haul route, marking a robust new phase in the airline’s international expansion strategy. Beginning July 8, 2026, the airline will operate direct, nonstop flights between RIOgaleão – Tom Jobim International Airport (GIG) in Rio de Janeiro and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City. This highly anticipated service will offer three weekly frequencies and has been developed through a strategic partnership with Rio de Janeiro City Hall.

This important operational milestone follows the company’s recent strategic decision to include widebody aircraft in its growing fleet, allowing the airline to cover longer distances and provide greater comfort for intercontinental travel. GOL’s involvement in the city of Rio de Janeiro is substantial. The airline has made expressive investments totaling approximately US$1.2 billion in local assets. Currently, GOL operates more than 30 domestic and international routes from Rio de Janeiro. These operations play a crucial role in the local economy, contributing significantly to the creation of highly skilled jobs and delivering broad economic benefits.

By establishing a direct connection between two of the most vital tourism and business centers in South and North America, GOL is successfully strengthening its overseas growth strategy. This connection opens up a wide range of new options and opportunities for customers across the continent.

The exciting news was formally unveiled at a high-profile press event on March 6 in RIOgaleão. Present at the ceremony were Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, Vice Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, ABRA’s CEO Adrian Neuhauser, GOL’s CEO Celso Ferrer, among several other authorities.
