Bill Joel uses cane in first performance since brain disorder diagnosis

Radar spoke exclusively with Dr. Kenneth Spielvogel, MDSr. Medical advisor, from the Carrara Wellness & Spa treatment about Joel’s condition.

Although he admitted that a “short video clip can only tell us so much,” he said: “What is visible – such as the use of a cane and some instability when walking – is consistent with balance disorders, which is a hallmark symptom of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.”

“Importantly, the use of a walking stick may also reflect caution rather than deterioration,” he added.

As for Joel’s prognosis, Dr. Spielvogel that this “depends heavily on the timing of diagnosis, response to treatment and overall health.”

He also noted, “Neurological conditions are often misunderstood and unfairly sensationalized,” and Joel’s diagnosis is “not inherently terminal.”

“Many people live for years, sometimes decades, dealing with it, especially if it is properly treated and controlled,” he added. “Quality of life varies, but with medical supervision and lifestyle support, individuals can continue to live full, meaningful lives.”

As far as Joel might recover from his condition, Dr. Spielvogel that it “depends on how it is defined.”

“In Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, some symptoms, especially gait and balance, may improve or stabilize with appropriate treatment, but others may persist,” he said.

“Early recognition, continued medical care, and eliminating contributing stressors, such as alcohol, significantly improve outcomes. So yes, improvement is possible, but expectations must be realistic and individualized.”
