Bette, the singer and actor whose career has spanned five decades, has been married to performance artist Martin von Haselberg, 76, since 1984, and together they welcomed Sophie in November 1986.

Long known for her fierce privacy, Midler has seen her now 39-year-old daughter emerge as both a striking lookalike and a determined actor in her own right, navigating the industry with a distinctly different profile.
Sophie Frederica Alohilani von Haselberg was born in Los Angeles and grew up between California and New York City.
She attended the Nightingale-Bamford School before studying sociology and East Asian studies at Yale University. After graduating in 2008, she briefly moved to China, hoping to avoid the lure of entertainment altogether.
“I did my utmost to avoid show business. I even moved to China and worked at an advertising agency,” she has said.

The distance did not last long. Drawn back to acting, she returned to Yale to train at the drama school, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts in 2014.
Reflecting on the inevitable comparisons to her mother, she said, “I wanted to forge my own path! I never wanted to be compared to (my mother), but since then I have accepted it as something completely inevitable.”
Her first foray into the showbiz industry took place behind the scenes.
Sophie worked as a production assistant on Sex and the city 2 in 2010, where she met Nicole Delaney and collaborated on a short film, YOYOwhich later premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.
That same year she made her theatrical debut in a New York production of Billy and Raywritten by Garry Marshall, who previously directed Midler in Beaches.

Sophie’s film breakthrough followed in 2015 with a role in Woody Allen’s Irrational personalongside Emma Stone, Jamie Blackley and Joaquin Phoenix.
Since then, she has favored independent projects, including Ask for Jane in 2018, By design in 2025, and Fantasy lifewhich premiered at SXSW last year and will hit theaters in March 2026.
She also signed with Fusion Entertainment in 2025.
Her television work included appearances in American crime story, American horror story, Pose, House of cards And WASP.
Her most visible role came in 2019 when she played Natasha on Lifetime’s American princessalthough the series was canceled after one season.

Sophie continues to shape her career on her own terms.
Off camera, Sophie married Harry JN Guinness in June 2020 during the Covid lockdowns, hosting a small ceremony at her mother’s home in Millbrook, New York.
“What made it all so special was that we did everything ourselves,” she said.
“We cooked ourselves. My mother did all the flowers. My father and I did the menu planning. My husband came up with all the wines.”
Sophie also works closely with Midler through the New York Restoration Project. She sits on the board and helps organize the annual Hulaween charity event.
A family source said the partnership reflects a shared ethos.
“There is a strong sense of mutual pride between them,” the insider said.
“Bette recognizes that Sophie is building a career on her own terms, regardless of her mother’s fame, while Sophie deeply respects the path her mother blazed without feeling the need to imitate it.
