BBC Leads Nominations for Banff World Media Festival’s Rockie Awards
BBC leads this year’s Banff Rockie Awards International Program Competition, with 28 nominations, followed by National Geographic and Hulu (seven nominations each) and Disney Television Studios and Audible (five nominations each).
The Banff World Media Festival is set to merge its Banff Gala Awards and Rockie Awards International Program Competition into a single ceremony during this year’s festival. The in-person awards show will take place Monday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. MT (4:30 p.m. PT/ 7:30 p.m. ET).
“For the first time ever, we’re bringing together the prestigious Gala Awards and the Rockies into one incredible event. This will be a spectacular night celebrating the industry’s most influential leaders alongside the world’s top creative talent — all in one room, under one roof. With so many groundbreaking creators and executives in attendance, this year’s show promises to be an unforgettable, must-see celebration of excellence in global entertainment,” said Banff festival executive director Jenn Kuzmyk.
The Banff Gala Awards honor “visionary executives, creatives, and changemakers shaping the global media landscape,” while the Rockie Awards International Program Competition focuses on TV and digital media. This year’s Rockie Awards International Program Competition includes 152 nominees from 22 countries across 30 categories.
The United States leads all countries with 54 nominations, followed by the UK (52), Canada (35), Australia (seven), Belgium, France and South Korea (five nominations each). Other countries with noms include China, Finland, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore and Spain.
The Rockie Awards Grand Jury chooses the Grand Jury Prize, which is selected from the top-scoring programs across the entire field of nominees. This year’s esteemed Grand Jury includes Hojin Kwon (senior executive director, Seoul Broadcasting System); Adam Lewinson (chief content officer, Tubi); Meghan Lyvers (executive director, original scripted UK & Ireland, Sky); Sitarah Pendelton-Eaglin (exec VP, head of unscripted series, Showtime//MTV Entertainment Studios & Paramount Media Network); and Christian Vesper (CEO, global drama and film, Fremantle).
Besides the Grand Jury Prize, the $25,000 Rogers Prize for Excellence in Canadian Content, awarded to the top Canadian production and the Prix Francophone for the top French language production will also be awarded as well as other special awards including the Carrie Hunter Emerging Talent Prize.
A total of 30 awards will be handed out in categories representing documentary & factual, arts & entertainment, children & youth, scripted and podcast. Two new categories are best performance in a drama and best performance in a comedy.
