‘Baldur’s Gate’ HBO series in the works from Craig Mazin

HBO is developing a TV adaptation of Hasbro’s fantasy role-playing video game series “Baldur’s Gate.”

Craig Mazin, the co-creator and showrunner of HBO’s hit video game adaptation “The Last of Us,” will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Mazin is also the creator of HBO’s 2019 limited series “Chernobyl.” Mazin also serves as executive producer alongside Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor and Gabriel Marano, head of television for Hasbro Entertainment.

As part of the “Dungeons & Dragons” franchise, the first “Baldur’s Gate” game was released in 1998. Most recently, “Baldur’s Gate 3” debuted in 2023 and achieved significant critical and commercial success. It became the first ever title to win all five major Game of the Year awards and surpass 15 million players.

“After pouring nearly 1,000 hours into the incredible world of ‘Baldur’s Gate 3,’ it is a dream come true to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast have created,” Mazin said in a statement. “I am a devoted fan of ‘D&D’ and the brilliant way Swen Vincke and his talented team have adapted it. I can’t wait to bring ‘Baldur’s Gate’ and all its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as possible, and I am deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important asset.”

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Craig Mazin on ‘Baldur’s Gate,’” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president and head of drama programming at HBO. “His deep and long-standing passion for the source material, combined with his remarkable talent for building immersive worlds full of rich, compelling characters, promise groundbreaking results.”
