Attorneys general warn OpenAI ‘harm to children will not be tolerated’

Californian Attorney -General Rob Bonta and Delaware attorney -General -general Kathy Jennings met and sent one open letter OpenAI to express their concern about the safety of chatgpt, especially for children and teenagers.

The warning comes a week after Bonta and 44 other lawyers have sent a letter to 12 of the best AI companies, according to reports of sexually inappropriate interactions between AI chatbots and children.

“Since the issue of that letter, we have heard of the heartbreaking death by suicide of a young Californian after he had long-term interactions with an OpenAI chatbot, as well as a similar disturbing murder in Connecticut,” Bonta and Jennings write. “Which guarantees were present did not work.”

The two state officials are currently investigating the proposed restructuring of OpenAI in an entity with a profit motive to ensure that the mission of the non-profit remains intact. That mission “includes ensuring that artificial intelligence is used safely” and the construction of artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all humanity, “including children”, according to the letter.

“Before we benefit, we must ensure that there are sufficient safety measures to not harm,” the letter continues. “It is our shared view that OpenAi and the industry are in general where they should be to guarantee safety in the development and use of AI Products. As a lawyers general, public safety is one of our core missions. While we continue our dialogue with regard to the re -capitalization plan of OpenAI, we must work to accelerate and enhance the future of this powerful.”

Bonta and Jennings have asked for more information about the current safety measures and governance of OpenAi and said they expect the company to take corrective measures immediately where necessary.

Bret Taylor, chairman of the OpenAi Board, said in a statement that the company is dedicated to tackle the concerns of the attorney general.

“We are deeply saddened by these tragedies and our deepest sympathies are with the families,” said Taylor. “Safety is our highest priority and we work closely with policy makers around the world.”

OpenAi has said it works to expand protection for teenagers with parental supervision and the ability for parents to be informed when their child is in a moment of acute need.
