Anya Taylor-Joy stars in Netflix’s ‘How to Kill Your Family’
Anya Taylor-Joy, who first broke out on Netflix with “The Queen’s Gambit,” returns to the streamer to star in a series adaptation of Bella Mackie’s bestselling novel “How to Kill Your Family.”
The eight-episode series, announced on Wednesday at the Edinburgh TV Festival, stars Taylor-Joy as murderous protagonist Grace Bernard.
“Grace has a complicated family. Her father is Simon Artemis; a billionaire and ruthless social climber. She is the product of an affair that he says he does not remember, and Grace and her mother were left to fend for themselves,” the synopsis reads. “When her mother dies and she is rejected by the very people who should love her, Grace turns her anger into something useful: killing this estranged extended family through morbidly creative means. Grace is on her way to revenge and a hefty inheritance, but her mission only takes her further away from what she really needs.”
“How to Kill Your Family” marks the first collaboration between Netflix and Sid Gentle Films Ltd (“Killing Eve”). Emma Moran (“Extraordinary”) serves as head writer and executive producer, while Taylor-Joy is also producing an EP for her LadyKiller Productions Inc. Sally Woodward Gentle, Lizzie Rusbridger and Lee Morris are executive producers for Sid Gentle. Mackie is a co-executive producer.
“As soon as I turned the last page, I knew I had to be part of bringing this story to life,” Taylor-Joy said in a statement. “After some (light) stalking from the inimitable Bella Mackie, I couldn’t be happier to be working with the team of Sally, Lizzie and Emma. I’m looking forward to getting our hands even dirtier.”
Mackie added: “It’s been exciting to see the characters I wrote given new life under this amazing creative team. Anya is best suited to play Grace: I often think she understands her better than I do. Working with Sid Gentle was a joy, and meeting Emma has given me complete confidence that the book is in safe hands.”
