Anthropic hires new CTO with focus on AI infrastructure

Anthropic has a new Chief Technical Officer, former Stripe CTO Rahul Patil. Patil started at the company earlier this week and took over from co-founder Sam McCandlish, who will move to a new role as main architect.

As part of the change, Anthropic contributes to the structure of his core technical group, so that the company’s product engineering team brings more closing contact with the infrastructure and inference teams. Since CTO, Patil, supervises calculation, infrastructure, inference and a variety of other engineering tasks. In the most important architectrol, McCandLish will work on pre-training and large-scale model training, which extends much of his earlier work. Both Patil and McCandLish report to anthropic president Daniela Amodei.

This new leadership structure comes as anthropic faces intense infrastructure competence of AI Labs at OpenAI and Meta, which have invested billions in the computer infrastructure. Mark Zuckerberg said that Meta Plans to spend $ 600 billion About the American infrastructure until the end of 2028, and OpenAi has sustained a similar amount due to his work with Oracle and the Stargate project. The scale of Anthropic’s own infrastructure expenditure is less clear, but there will be enormous pressure to optimize the growing infrastructure for both speed and power consumption.

At the same time, the popularity of the Claude products from Anthropic has already put the infrastructure of the company under considerable pressure. In July, the company introduced new tariff limits for Claude Code, with a view to power users who had performed the app “continuously in the background, 24/7”. According to the new rules, users are limited to every week between 240 and 480 hours of Sonnet use, and between 24 and 40 hours of Opus 4 use, depending on the infrastructure tribe.

With more than 20 years in various technical functions, Patil offers a considerable infrastructure experience for anthropic. He previously spent five years in technical roles at Stripe and served as a senior VP for cloud infrastructure at Oracle. He also held technical functions at Amazon and Microsoft.

In a statement, Amodei Patil’s experience emphasizes the construction of stable infrastructure for companies. “Rahul brings a proven track record when building and scaling up the kind of reliable infrastructure that companies need,” is the statement. “I could no longer be enthusiastic about what this means for strengthening Claude’s position as the leading intelligence platform for companies.”

In a paired explanation, patil applied to the research and dedication of Anthropic to AI safety. “I am very happy to participate in AI development at this crucial moment at this crucial moment,” said Patil, adding that his work at the company “feels like the most important work that I could do now – I personally can’t think of a greater calling and responsibility.”
