Anthony Hopkins’ rebellious past fueled his battle with alcohol

When Hopkins was recently asked by the BBC if he believes everyone harbors a “monster” within him, he said: “We do that because we have to survive unless we can control it. Unless we find ways around it every day. We can come up with punitive ideas and arguments, like I did, but you have to stop. You have to say, ‘Okay, I can’t do this. People don’t deserve this.’
Now married to his third wife, Stella Arroyave, 69, since 2003, Hopkins says she “broke me wide open” and helped him find peace after decades of regret and fear.
As to whether he’s happy now, Hopkins added, “I am because, I mean, most of my friends have passed away.”
“They’re gone, God bless them. So I hope to be there a little longer. But even that, I think, ‘Oh well, I had a good time. I laughed, and I’m happy about that.'”
