Anthony Hopkins’ dark drinking secret revealed

The 87-year-old admitted that at his worst he was teetering ‘on the edge of hell’, adding: ‘I had a tendency to space out and hallucinate. I was crazy, very hyper and manic. I drank all the time to kill the discomfort and self-loathing.”
But on December 29, 1975, everything literally came to a standstill.
“I was driving over canyons, blacked out and didn’t know where I was going. In the morning I was wondering, did I kill someone? And I checked the front of my car,” the movie star recalls.
Hopkins remembered the experience vividly and described a mysterious moment of clarity that followed.
“It was exactly 11 o’clock – I looked at my watch – and this is the scary part: a deep, powerful thought or voice spoke to me from within and said, ‘It’s all over. Now you can start living. And it all had a purpose, so don’t forget a moment of it.'”
