AI journalism startup Symbolic.ai signs deal with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp

Editors have been experiment been working on AI for several years, but for the most part those efforts have been just that: experiments. A relatively unknown startup, Symbolic.ai, wants to change that, and just do it signed an important agreement with News Corp, Rupert Murdoch’s media conglomerate.
News Corp, whose key assets include MarketWatch, the New York Post and The Wall Street Journal, will use Symbolic’s AI platform with its financial news hub Dow Jones Newswires.
Symbolic.ai, founded by former eBay CEO Devin Wenig and Ars Technica co-founder Jon Stokes, says its AI platform “can help produce quality journalism and content” and that its tool has even led to “productivity gains of as much as 90% for complex investigative tasks.” The platform is designed to make editorial workflows more efficient and provide improvements in areas such as newsletter creation, audio transcription, fact checking, headline optimization, SEO consulting and more.
Overall, News Corp has shown a willingness to integrate AI into its media operations. The company signed in 2024 a multi-year collaboration with OpenAI, where it would license its material to the AI company. Last November, the media conglomerate indicated that this was the case considering a branchand license the material to other AI companies.
