AI crawler Firecrawl raises $14.5M, is still looking to hire agents as employees

The co-founder of Firecrawl and CEO Caleb Peffer knew the exact moment he found the investor to lead his Serie A.

He was in a coffee meeting with Abhishek Sharma of the Nexus Venture Partner in The Blue Bottle in South Park in San Francisco (a favorite VC taas). While he described the future of the company, he gestured so animated that his seat tilted.

“I actually fell out of my chair. And Abhishek, like a big investor, caught the chair and me when I fell,” Peffer described with a smile. That felt like a symbol for how the founder/investor relationship should work. “I think that was a clear signal that he was the right partner.”

On Tuesday Firecrawl announced a Serie A under the leadership of Nexus with the participation of Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke and existing investor Y Combinator.

Firecrawl offers a popular open-source webcrawler for developers and AI agents, with a commercially supported version available via API. It is used by 350,000 developers, almost has 50,000 stars On Github and the remarkable customers, Shopify, Replit and Zapier and “Some of the largest hedge funds in the world are,” Peffer told WAN. And, he says, the company is already profitable.

The startup has also just released an API that supports search and soon adds support for natural language prompts, as co-founder and CTO Nicolas Silberstein Camara noted.

Peffer, who in 2022 with Camara and CMO Eric Ciarla together with Camara and CMO foundation, said that he was Lütke as an investor ‘the best kind of validation’.

They landed him through a tough e-mail after they discovered that the founder of Shopify had registered to try their product through their self-service portal.

“We saw his e -mail coming in,” said Peffer. The Firecrawl -Meerning e -Mailed him immediately to welcome him as a customer, but received no response. Two months later, some Shopify people contact Firecrawl for a business contract. So Peffer took his shot and e -mailed Lütke again, and said they would like it if he participates in their coming round.

This time Lütke responded with compliments about their product. He was inside.

Although AI -Webcrawlers nowadays have a somewhat dubious reputation, mainly because of bad actors who ignore Robot.TXT files, they are also a necessary part of the fast -growing AI world. AI trains on the internet, agents must have access to web pages to perform their duties, and companies need personalized crawlers to consume their own websites for training and activities.

The Firecrawl founders also hope to help tackle the frustrating parts of their industry. They work on tools to help website owners, publishers and other content makers “are paid when AI uses their content. We think this is as it should be,” said Peffer.

Although there have been a lot of efforts about this idea of big names such as Adobe and Getty, as well as startups such as Bria, Calliope networkAnd others, Peffer believes that Firecrawl has a lead because it already works with those who scrape data.

“We already have one side of the market,” he said. “What we want to do is simply connect that side of the market to the website owners, the publishers.”

Interestingly, Firecrawl also went viral a few months ago for reasons that have little to do with their open source tool. They had placed an advertisement on the YC job board that an AI agent wanted to hire as an employee for a salary of $ 15,000 -perhaps the first vacancy for an employee of an agent ever.

That search for a job did not yield an agent who was worth renting, so a fireworks raised the budget to increase $ 1 million to hire different agents and the developers they have built, and tried again. Applicants have been flooded, Peffer said, but the company has not hired one yet. The founders realized that evaluating and managing Wanna-Be agent employees is a task in itself. So now they are looking for an AI Staff Chef.

Firecrawl’s Peffer will be on stage in October to discuss everything he has learned in a session that includes the advantages and disadvantages of hiring AI agents as early employees.
