‘Adolescence’ will be the first streaming show to Top British reviews

Hit Netflix drama “Adolescence” has crushed an important barrier in the British television landscape and became the first streaming show that claimed the first place in the weekly TV assessments of the country.

The acclaimed series exceeded the traditional broadcasts, including BBC’s “The Apprentice” and “Death in Paradise”, according to official data released by UK Ratings Body Barb (Beredenders Audience Research Board).

The first episode of “Adolescence” attracted 6.45 million viewers in his debut week and set a new record for streaming viewers in the UK. This figure surpasses the previous streaming record of 6.3 million set by “Fool Me One” of Netflix in January 2024.

“Adolescence” showed a remarkable endurance with his second episode that attracted 5.94 million viewers, while BBC One’s “The Apprentice” and “Death in Paradise” followed in third and fourth positions with 5.79 and 5.75 million viewers respectively. The third and fourth episodes of “Adolescence” also performed strongly and attracted 5.14 million and 4.65 million viewers respectively.

‘Adolescence’ was launched on March 13 and quickly lit a global conversation with his infallible representation of a 13-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of killing a schoolmate. The series has earned widespread appliance for its innovative single-shot film technology that is used in every episode, increasing the intensity of the drama.

“Darkly and brilliant written, this show unpacks the complexity of humanity and masculinity and how the rise of the manosphere has so creepy and quick in the lives of young people through social media,” wrote Aramide Tinubu, looking at the series for Variety. “The lots, raw and stunningly worn,” adolescence “emphasizes how we have failed ourselves and will constantly drop the generations behind us.”

The cast includes Stephen Graham, newcomer Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, Christine Tremarco and Amelie Pease.

While “adolescence” marks a historic moment for streaming platforms, it is still behind some of the highest rated broadcasting programs of the year. The “The Traitors” of the BBC, “Call the Midwife”, and the “Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell” documentary all had higher seven -day public figures. Likewise, ITV’s Headline-Grabbing drama “Mr Bates vs the post office” achieved 10 million viewers in the first week when it was broadcast last year.

Barb began to include streaming data in its ratio calculations in November 2021, which reflects the growing importance of digital platforms in the television ecosystem. Netflix registered with Barb in October 2022.
