A Super Bowl-sized ghost story: Inside the ‘haunted’ Winchester Mystery House, just 12 minutes from Levi’s Stadium

Just a 12-minute drive from the roar of the Super Bowl crowd at Levi’s Stadium, the terrifying Winchester mystery house in San Jose is in stark contrast to the modern spectacle nearby.
The mansion, with Victorian architecture and walls steeped in mystery, is known worldwide for its bizarre design and the chilling stories surrounding it.
What started as a modest home grew into one of the most enigmatic homes in American history, captivating visitors for more than a century.
The house was the personal residence of Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchesterthe widow of William Wirt Winchesterheir to the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune. After suffering the loss of her husband and child, Sarah moved from Connecticut to California in the 1880s.
There, she bought an eight-bedroom ranch in San Jose and immediately began transforming it—and never stopped.

Over time, the property expanded into a maze of more than 160 rooms, with eccentric layouts that seem to defy logic. They include stairs leading to ceilings, doors opening into walls, countless windows, fireplaces and secret passageways – all of which leave visitors disoriented and scared.
Construction of the property lasted nearly four decades, only stopping when Sarah died in 1922.
Much of the house’s unusual design was due in large part to its continued construction, often without plan, and frequently modified or repaired after earthquakes or other structural changes.
While the architecture alone is enough to attract attention, the house’s enduring infamy stems from its reputation as a “haunted house.”

Legend has it that Sarah believed she was haunted by the ghosts of those killed by Winchester rifles.
It was widely reported that a clairvoyant warned her that she must continue building to calm the restless spirits or her life could be in danger.
Although historians have long debated the veracity of these eerie claims, the legends persist.
Over the years, visitors and staff have reported disturbing experiences, including unexplained cold spots, strange footsteps, doors that close on their own and the eerie feeling of being watched.
Today, the Winchester Mystery House is a major tourist attraction, offering guided tours of the mansions that take guests through 110 rooms in approximately 65 minutes.
Visitors can even choose to access the basement and attic to explore rarely seen parts of the house.
There are also torchlight tours, Victorian gardens, cafes, gift shops and exhibitions on site.

Located just eight miles from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the mansion is an easy side trip for visitors in town looking for something other than cheering on their favorite team.
By car the journey takes about 12 to 15 minutes, while public transport can take from 40 minutes to more than an hour.
In the shadow of one of the largest sporting venues in the world, the Winchester Mystery House remains a haunting reminder that some mysteries refuse to stay buried.
The Super Bowl takes place on February 8 and sees the New England Patriots go into battle with the Seattle Seahawks.
