A property where prestige and power collide: 120-year-old home of famous federal judges listed for $5.8 million

Behind a long, tree-lined driveway in a quiet rural community stands a prized estate that once belonged to one of the most respected federal judges in American history.

The historic property in Bedford Hills, NY, now for sale for $5.75 million, was built in 1906 and for many years was home to Right taught handwho is widely regarded as one of the greatest judges to serve in the US, despite never making it to the Supreme Court.

Born in New York, Hand is known as a lawyer, lawyer and philosopher whose ideas about freedom of speech and civic duty are still taught in classrooms today. He served a record 52 years, much of which was spent on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, a role he held from 1924 until his semi-retirement in 1951.

This New York-based federal court was highly influential and its rulings often shaped national policy, with Hand at the helm.

“No one I have ever worked with so clearly had the mark of genius,” the Indiana University president said Thomas Erlichwho served as Hand’s clerk, once wrote. “He continually broke new ground in content and style.”

The legal pioneer grew up in Albany, New York and spent his entire life and career on the East Coast. He spread his influence to Massachusetts when he began teaching at Harvard Law School – his alma mater – after taking a step back from his day job.

Given his status, it is no surprise that Hand sought a retreat in the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Situated on nearly 17 acres of private grounds, this 6,200-square-foot estate still offers the same serenity today, as a peaceful retreat just an hour from Manhattan by train.

Based on a traditional Colonial and Beaux-Arts design, the home features yellow siding, black shutters and flower boxes that extend from the roofline, all custom details said to have been requested by Hand himself.

“It was designed by the company especially for him Delano and Aldrichwho also designed the Knickerbocker Club in New York City,” says listing agent Christine Foster from Corcoran Legends Realty.

“The history of this house is just amazing. I love it. The details, the craftsmanship, the grace of the rooms, it’s all still there.”

As Hand’s influence continues to echo through America’s classrooms, this house tells a different story, one of retreat and reflection. Set among exceptional trees, perennial gardens and gently sloping lawns, the property offers the same solitude and balance that probably brought him here more than a century ago.

True to the refined elegance of Delano and Aldrich’s work, the home embodies their ethos of symmetry and thoughtful design. The high ceilings, wide windows and perfectly proportioned rooms celebrate light and air, concepts that still define the atmosphere of the house today.

“The windows are great,” says Foster. “They let the light pour in from all sides.”

Inside, the house covers three floors, all fully equipped with heating and air conditioning. The main level features gracious living rooms with five working fireplaces. A grand staircase leads to the upper floors, where the third floor houses what Foster calls “a unique artist studio and studio.”

With tall north-facing windows and historic details, it is a space that feels both creative and serene.

“The current owner says this house reminds her of old Hollywood,” Foster adds. “It really captures the Beaux-Arts era with its sense of grandeur.”

In addition to the main residence, the expansive estate also includes a guest house, a greenhouse and a shimmering pool surrounded by mature trees.

“The location is fantastic too,” says Foster. “You have easy access to shops, trains, highways and schools, all within minutes. But as soon as you drive down the long driveway to the house, you feel like you are in the heart of the country, surrounded by peace, solitude and privacy.”

After more than thirty years in the care of the current owners, the house remains in pristine condition: an ideal canvas for the next steward.

For those who appreciate history, architecture and timeless design, this Bedford Hills estate offers not only a connection to one of America’s greatest legal minds, but also an opportunity to own a lasting piece of his legacy.
