A look into the life of Joran van der Sloot Inside ‘the toughest prison in the world’

Located in a remote area of Peru, Challapalca faces freezing temperatures and thin air, which contribute to serious health problems among the prisoners. The location of the Peruvian prison is so isolated that mobile signals do not reach it.
In one Document from July 1997 published by Amnesty International, the organization revealed that the independent Coordinadora Nacional de Derechos Humanos consulted high-altitude medical experts on the consequences of holding prisoners in Challapalca.
Dr. Carlos Monge Casinelli, a Peruvian doctor expert in high-altitude medicine, said: “Life is possible at 5,200 meters above sea level, but health is seriously affected. This is the opinion of international high-altitude experts. In my opinion, a penitentiary at that altitude can only be considered a deliberate provision for a possible death penalty.”
In addition, a team from the Peruvian Defensoría del Pueblo – Ombudsman issued a press release after visiting the facility, stating: “According to information collected from a medical point of view, survival at more than 4,000 meters above sea level is difficult and poses serious risks to human health.”
