A look inside Chevy Chase: from comedy hero to Hollywood outcast

Jay Chandrasekhar, who directed several episodes of the show, describes the atmosphere on set.
“There was a little bit of negativity around Chevy and the rest of the cast,” he says. “There was a desire to shoot him every day.”
Chandrasekhar also talks about a confrontation over line delivery, saying, “I’m like, ‘If you take away that pause, I think it’ll be funnier’… he’s like, ‘Fine. F— it.'”
He adds that Chase later admitted, “You’re right, that was better.”
And a breakdown came after an on-set confrontation involving the N-word.
Chandrasekhar remembers Chase saying, “You know, Richard Pryor and I used to call Richard Pryor the N-word, and he called me The Honky, and we loved each other.”
Chase also reportedly got into a fight with a black star on the show. Hours after the story was leaked to the press, Chase burst out: “Who seduced me?” and, “My career is ruined! I’m ruined!”
Chase never returned to the series. The documentary ends with family members discussing his alcoholism, 2021 heart failure, and child abuse, with Chase himself telling Zenovich, “You’re not smart enough. Why is that?”
