‘Rebel Moon’ VR game is launched from Netflix, Sandbox VR
A virtual reality game based on Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” franchise on Netflix is launching from Sandbox VR.
The experience, titled “Rebel Moon: The Descent,” will see players “prepare alongside their fellow rebels to battle the ruthless forces of the Mother World’s military,” according to the game’s description. “Inspired by the vision of legendary director Zack Snyder, players join the Resistance and are transported to the planet Daggus, where they experience what it’s like to descend through towering skyscrapers, gritty city streets and an underground mine as they defeat the enemy. beat. soldiers and spacecraft.”
The ‘Rebel Moon’ experience initially launched as a limited preview of Sandbox in London in conjunction with the release of ‘Rebel Moon – Part Two’ in April 2024. As of Tuesday, the ‘Rebel Moon: The Descent’ game is now available at all 55 Sandbox VR locations worldwide.
The game marks the 10th immersive VR experience created by Sandbox’s in-house gaming studio and the location-based VR experience company’s second collaboration with Netflix following the September 2023 launch of “Squid Game Virtuals.” According to Sandbox VR, “Squid Game Virtuals” became the fastest experience ever, with $1 million in revenue. In its first two months, the game generated $4.56 million in ticket sales at physical locations.
Netflix and Sandbox VR are currently in talks to develop the streamer’s other popular IPs into VR gaming experiences.
“We’re currently exploring a few others, but nothing has been signed yet,” Sandbox VR CEO Steve Zhao said Variety. “But because we’ve already worked with Netflix on two IPs and have mastered working with them, and we love it, it’s very organic for us to see what else is out there. This could certainly be a multi-year relationship as we continue to explore which IPs could work. For us, it certainly helps to have IP that really resonates with fans. Or in the case of a ‘Rebel Moon’, we were all big fans of Zack Snyder. Another thing is that we also want to look at IPs that work very well in VR. So anything that’s action-packed, anything with a very distinct, rich, colorful world, that really resonates. And of course something that is very social, where people can really work together.”
As Netflix outsources its VR gaming content, it continues to build its own catalog of mobile games offered through the streamer’s app, including an upcoming title based on “Rebel Moon.” Netflix recently released “Squid Game: Unleashed,” celebrating the second season of the popular South Korean drama.
