‘Harry Potter’ prop sold for nearly $300,000 to benefit injured stunt double
The Marauders card from the Harry Potter movies has broken records and become the most expensive prop ever sold from the film franchise.
The prop, which first appeared in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabansold for $299,250 during Propstore’s Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction on Thursday, November 14.
The proceeds from the sale go to aid David Holmes, Daniel Radcliffe’s former stunt double, who became paralyzed after breaking his neck on set in 2009.
Holmes, 43, had rehearsed a fight scene for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 when he suffered an injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
“This auction was particularly meaningful, with David Holmes joining us to introduce the incredible Marauder’s Map, which has broken a world record for the most expensive Harry Potter prop sold at auction,” said Propstore founder and CEO, Stephen Lane, said via a press release. “With even more incredible items set to go under the hammer over the next three days, we invite collectors and fans around the world to take part in this unforgettable event.”
Ahead of the auction, Holmes, owner of the Marauder’s Map, shared on Instagram why he was selling the prop.
“While sifting through some old memorabilia from my days on the Potter set, I came across something truly magical: a real Marauder’s Map on the screen, tucked away with the get-well cards my mother had saved from my time at the Stanmore Royal Orthopedic Hospital, where I was recovering. Fans will remember this map from Prisoner of Azkaban, which helps Harry navigate the halls of Hogwarts and reveals the comings and goings of everyone,” Holmes wrote in October.
Holmes added that life has been tough over the past year, and elaborated on the challenges he has faced – including financial problems.
“This year has been a challenge. Previously, I was the victim of a targeted scam that wiped out my cryptocurrency savings—money that my girlfriend (who shares a similar disability) and I had set aside for winter vacations. Due to our conditions, we have difficulty regulating our body temperature, making the cold months incredibly painful and difficult to bear. So losing that money was a blow, to say the least,” he wrote.
Holmes continued, “Being paralyzed comes with enormous costs: 24-hour care, specialized equipment, adapted vehicles, you name it. Although it was not an easy decision to say goodbye to this special piece of my past, I have chosen to auction the Marauder’s Map during the Prop Store Auction.’
