A source claimed that Jane had been dating Emhoff for three months before the alleged slapping incident, and Jane reportedly broke up with her friend shortly after it occurred.
The insider, described only as a “top New York businessman”, said he was at home when he received a call from Jane.
He told Daily Mail: “It was hard to hear her because she was sobbing. She told me she was with a man and he hit her.
“It was very clear what she told me. She said she was with a man, her date, she was at the Cannes Film Festival, and he hit her. She was in the car with the man at the time.

“I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t know if I should call the French police. I couldn’t reach her after I called back.”
Jane’s friend continued, “In later conversations, but quite concurrently, she told me more about the man.
“It was about three in the morning. They were trying to get out of there and they had both been drinking. There was a huge queue for taxis.
“(Jane) went up to one of the parking guys and offered him $100 or whatever to get to the head of the line. She told me she put her hand on his shoulder. Doug apparently thought she was it was flirting, and came and hit her in the face.”

Another friend, identified only as a “female lawyer from New York,” also confirmed the alleged story.
She told Daily Mail: “They have eaten. She said Doug was very charming, and it was lovely. Then I think it was between 2am and 3am, it was still raging, but she was wearing four inch heels and a floor length dress so it was time to leave.
‘She said there had been no fight before he hit her. You would think it was a fairytale trip.
“She put her hand on the clerk’s shoulder, and as she was talking to him, Doug came up.”

Although Jane attempted to leave the Cannes after-party event on her own after the alleged attack, Emhoff allegedly “barged into the taxi” with her.
Jane’s friend, a lawyer, said: ‘Suddenly the car was there and they took her into the car.
“She said she wanted to go back to the hotel without him. But as she closed the door, he forced himself into the car, which she didn’t want.”

They continued, “I think she asked him what that was all about? And all she could really get out of him was that he thought she was hitting on the servant.
“(Jane) told me she was so ashamed. She couldn’t believe he is the person he is and it turned into a trailer trash moment.
“It woke her up to the self-deception she had. She realized he was bad news. This was the first time she saw his ugly side.”

A third friend, described by the Daily Mail as a ‘top female executive of a company’, claimed Jane first told her the story in 2018.
She told the outlet: “I don’t know if it was an aggressive slap or a slap, but it was something I know she would never forget, and something that would end a relationship immediately.
“She has never been hit in her life. (Jane) is a beautiful, strong woman and you would never expect anyone to hit her.”
The company’s CEO continued: ‘When he hit her, she hit him back.
“I asked her if he ever apologized. She said no, but he commented on the slap she gave him. It was a tennis metaphor. But no apology at all.”
