‘Agatha All Around’ stars tease ‘a gay explosion’ in Marvel series

The cast and creatives behind “Agatha All Along” celebrate the Disney+ series’ unprecedented LGBTQ representation.

“I agree with that,” said Sasheer Zamata, who plays Jennifer Kale, when told at Monday’s premiere that “Agatha” is being described as “the happiest project Marvel has ever done. ‘You’ll see if you look. Witches are strange by nature, just because we are outcasts and cast aside for many reasons. This show shows a really good representation of different types of people and that we can all use the power we have within us to move forward and be great.

Joe Locke, who plays Teen, explained: “It has a lot of layers and gay is one of them. That’s one of the nice things about the show. … Teen is an odd man on the show, but it’s not the driving force, which I think is really great. It’s really nice to just have these positive, strange characters.

Kathryn Hahn, who plays Agatha Harkness, explained: “The most exciting thing about it is that it’s not exactly what it’s about. It’s so normalized.

Locke came out publicly shortly after his star-studded acting debut in “Heartstopper.” Zamata, a former Saturday Night Live player, came out as queer in an interview with LGBTQ outlet Them earlier this month. “I’ve always looked up to Wanda Sykes as another Black queer woman in comedy. Living her truth is really inspiring and amazing,” she said at the “Agatha” premiere. “I’m proud to be among so many great people who do that openly.”

Aubrey Plaza, who said in a 2016 interview with the Advocate that she falls in love with men and women, was quiet on the details but cracked on “Agatha”: “By the end, it’s going to be a gay explosion.”

Plaza plays Rio Vidal while Marvel newcomer Patti LuPone plays Lila Calderu.

“It’s the happiest show on Marvel,” says Ali Ahn, who plays Alice Wu-Gulliver. “There’s a lot of pageantry that we’re already competing with. I think what makes it more gay is that we sing with Patti.
