Cooper and Ariana break up; Gallino Returns

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from “Landman” Season 2, Episode 2, “Sins of the Father,” which premiered Sunday, Nov. 23 on Paramount+.

Last week’s season premiere of “Landman” was a fraught episode: Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) found out his mother died; his son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) struck gold with oil; his daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) attended TCU; his boss Cami (Demi Moore) gave a speech that scared her enemies; and his ex-wife Angela (Ali Larter) threw an expensive dinner against the wall. Now that the season 2 plot threads have been teased, let’s move on to the second episode.

  • Right off the bat: Are these the craziest lyrics we’ve ever heard from a song on a Taylor Sheridan show? “If there ever comes a time when I get rabies, you’ll be high on my bitin list.” Tyler Childers is great, but this surprised me!
  • Why is Cooper so shocked? He has effectively won the lottery and his father is the titular husbandman. Ask for some help with the paperwork and you’re done, dude.
  • I also understand that Ariana (Paulina Chavez) is being triggered, but it’s just a few days of a life-changing week for your partner that will benefit you too. Just go with it…he’ll be fine!
  • Wait, she’s breaking up with him this? This communication error is such a solvable problem! All of Ariana’s points are valid, but solutions can be resolved in about 45 minutes, especially now that they have funding.
  • Okay, now that both TL (Sam Elliott) and Tommy have been talking trash about the now-deceased matriarch of their family, I’m dying to know what she actually did to get into a fight with them.
  • I love Tommy arguing with the radio DJs like they’re in his truck.
  • It’s also amazing that Tommy’s phone lights up with a picture of Angela mid-screaming and a creepy ringtone every time she calls.
  • Oh, this missing $400 million is going to be a problem. Too bad the only person who knows where it is, Monty (Jon Hamm), is dead.
  • Rebecca (Kayla Wallace) putting Nate (Colm Feore) in his place felt great. Shut up, nerd – she can negotiate a contract to drill on the damn moon!
  • Angela misusing Nate’s name several times is a great gag. To be honest, he looks like a Neil!
  • Cooper might be the dumbest person on the planet. I understand wanting to control your estate, but HIS FATHER IS THE COUNTRYMAN! Let him look at the contract!
  • Wow! Who would have thought that Tommy would have some pretty good advice about Ariana’s situation and how Cooper should listen to her?
  • I would love a spin-off of the tipsy, farting horn dogs in the retirement home.
  • When it comes to Angela and Ainsley versus the THHSC, I’m firmly Team Norris. They were hanging out with the older ones…that’s fun!
  • If I ever need a lawyer, please let him be as ruthless as Rebecca.
  • As expected, it looks like the skeletons in Monty’s closet will haunt everyone this season.
  • Is there a situation where Sheriff Walt (Mark Collie) wouldn’t just do what Tommy told him over FaceTime?
  • “Oh, that was just my sadness” was an excellent deadpan delivery from Thornton.
  • Another heartbreaking performance from Elliott. I call it now: give him some attention!
  • “I was not raised to father a son.” Damn, Tommy’s getting introspective!
  • Wow, Tommy’s upbringing was a nightmare.
  • The moment Cooper told Tommy he loved him and his best side was good enough…instant tears! A great emotional beat. Also love Thornton’s acting as Tommy tries not to cry.
  • What are the chances that Cooper’s new business partner is Gallino (Andy Garcia)?
