Bavaria fictional champions Green standards

The German production house Bavaria Fiction has become a green pioneer by guaranteeing validation for its head office under the ECO management and audit schedule, the world’s most demanding environmental management system and ISO 14001 certification. The company claims to be the first major film and series production house in the world that has achieved this.

A team of Bavaria Fiction led by Tobias Wolf, senior sustainability manager, coordinates measures for environmental protection on energy, water, business trips, vehicle fleet, resources and waste, with the aim of reducing the emissions of CO₂.

Since the introduction of the environmental management system, the total emissions at the Munich head office have fallen by approximately 3% on an annual basis of 381 to 369 tonnes of CO₂ equivalents. A major driver was the increased electrification of the company’s fleet where emissions fell by more than 13%, from 44 to 38 tons of CO₂.

In the coming years, Bavaria will pursue fiction further ambitious environmental goals, including 4% cuts in energy and heat consumption, and a reduction of 5% in company travel-related CO₂ emissions by 2027.

Management of directors Marcus Ammon and Jan S. Kaiser said: “We are more than excited that we are the first production company of this scale that is validated by EMAs. As a company, we recognize our social responsibility to contribute to environmental protection. Our environmental management system has helped us to improve our performance.”

Wolf added: “Environmentally conscious action has been accompanied by our productions for many years and is already standard practice on our sets. With our EMAS validation we are now taking the next big step: we take a holistic view of sustainability and position the strategic level – with clear goals, structured processes and measurable progress.”

Bavaria Fiction is a member of the “Green Shooting” working group in Germany, which – together with broadcasters, production companies, VOD services and film financiers – has developed and continues to refine ecological standards for green production. Because these standards were introduced in 2022, more than 50 Bavaria fiction productions were created in accordance with the guidelines.

On his studio pot in Munich, the Bavaria film group offers ideal conditions for green production thanks to an ecologically sustainable energy supply.
