The fiery explosion broke out just after 8:30 on Saturday evening and led to an enormous emergency aid from the Coast Guard, FDNY and NYPD.
According to the FDNY, 3 people were pulled out of the water – including a critical condition – while the remaining passengers managed to swim to a small area for the Bronx coast line. The Coast Guard brought the shaded survivors to a nearby island where they were evaluated by paramedics.
Video and photos that were shared on social media showed towering plumes that rise above the water.
According to the NYPD, the driver of the boat was arrested and is now confronted with accusations of driving while drunk and reckless threat.
All 22 passengers were later taken to nearby hospitals and officials say that everyone is expected to recover. The cause of the explosion is still being investigated.
