2025 will be a ‘pivotal year’ for Meta’s augmented and virtual reality, says CTO

Meta Cto Andrew “BoZ” Bosworth, who was one of the first 15 engineers of the company, published a memo earlier this year that 2025 could be the year of greatness for reality labs, the augmented and Virtual Reality unit of the company. Or it would be the year in which the metaverse will go down as a “legendary setback”.
Nowadays BOZ seems to be tending to his potential for quantity. But the market will be the final determining factor.
“We will judge at the end of the decade, but this feels like the crucial year,” BOZ said on Thursday during a Bloomberg technology -interview.
BOZ noted that the Ray Ban AI glasses from Meta had been a breakthrough that generated both consumers and competitors. Meta has sold from February More than 2 million pairs Since their debut in October 2023. Last fall, they surpassed traditional jet bans, even before Meta AI functions rolled out.
In the meantime, Google announced partnerships last month with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to make smart glasses based on Android XR. Apple is reportedly also a push to Let go of smart glasses in 2026.
“Suddenly we go from toil in the field of uncertainty to a lot in the world with a product that is very attractive for consumers, and therefore competitors,” Boz said. “The clock started with the arrival of the competition, and that only means that the progress we make this year is of disproportionate value for every year before or after it is closed.”
Nevertheless, competition between other established operators does not mean if the market does not accept the AR and VR products from Meta, which would float the industry to standardize the technology.
“The market is actually, especially when it comes to hardware, a disadvantaged indicator,” said Boz. “So you are looking for early indicators. To a certain extent you must have a level of self -confidence and taste in -house.”
He said this was something he learned from Sheryl Sandberg, former Chief Operating Officer at Meta.
“Sheryl always talked about how most companies do not fail because they have been defeated by a competitor,” said Boz. “Most companies fail because they have not implemented their own plan correctly. And so what I try to do with the team is really concentrating, not so much on the competitive landscape as op [whether] We perform our standards. “
The Meta CTO said that the company has “a series of ambitious plans for the year” for which it is on schedule.
“What we will know at the end of the year is whether we have implemented our plan or not,” said Boz. “What we will know in five years is whether that was enough.”
