How ‘nobody’ daughter conquered childhood

In her new book MatriarchTina, 71, recalled the first week of Beyoncé on a “Little Toddler School” in Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, where she took a break from the beauty school to check her daughter.

Tina’s heart sank while she saw the other children laughing at the playground together, but there was her daughter – all alone.

Later Tina discovered that her daughter was not pushing “imaginary friend” on the swing – she only used the time to practice her singing as a young star.

She wrote: “Later that day I asked if it had been an imaginary friend in the swing. No, Beyoncé explained. It was just something to do while she sang in her head for herself.

“Nobody liked her, she explained, just as businesslike as that girl. I thought it was because she was too shy, and I did not understand that the distinction was that she stopped in new spaces.

“I was struggling with this: how could I help this child, who was this enormous personality at home who always sang and was a joke, stopped hiding her light in front of the world?”

However, the harsh words did not only come from the classmates of Beyoncé at that time.

Tina remembered how one of her daughter’s teachers as a young child had sparkled as a ‘slow’, and explained: ‘She said, as if this was an awkward comment:’ You know, I know you had to start on Beyoncé Young. But she is struggling. ‘
