‘Clean Slate’ canceled after a season at Amazon

Amazon has canceled the comedy series “Clean Slate” after a season, Variety has confirmed.
The show originally debuted on Prime Video in February. It played Laverne Cox, George Wallace, Jay Wilkison, DK Uzoukwu, Telma Hopkins, Philip Garcia and Norah Murphy. It distinguishes the distinction that it is the last completed series produced by the legendary Norman Lear before his death in 2023.
The logline for the show states that “it follows on Harry Slate (Wallace), an old-school and outspoken Alabama-Autowass owner, who is looking for a lot of souls when the alienated child he thought was a son, returns to mobile as a proud, transvrouw, Desiree (Cox).”
Wallace and Cox have made the series together with Dan Ewen. All three served as executive producers together with Lear, Brent Miller and Simran Baidwan. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios produced.
The show had a long route to the screen. It was originally reported that it was developing in Peacock in 2020, before it went to Amazon’s IMDB TV (later Freeevee) in 2021. It was picked up to Series in 2022 and was then moved to Prime Video after Amazon Clas closed Freevee Down.
“Clean Slate” received positive reviews from critics about its release, with a critical approval classification of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. In her review for VarietyAramide Tinubu wrote: “‘Clean Slate’ is not perfect, but it shows the transgender experience with beautiful humanity. Although Harry does not always understand the Desiree perspective, he extends his hands to her, even on his most stubborn moments.”
Deadline first reported the cancellation.
