Google wants Search to be more like an AI assistant in 2025

The search from Google is in the middle of a “trip” around AI, said Google CEO Sundar Pichai during the company’s profit call on Tuesday. The start of that trip was AI overviews, a controversial and monumental shift in how Google provides information to billions of search users.

But that was just the beginning.

“While AI continues to expand the universe of questions that people can ask, 2025 will be one of the largest years for search innovation so far,” Pichai said during his opening comments about the call.

During the call, Pichai explained the next phase of Google’s plan to pack searches with AI functions from the company’s research lab, DeepMind. The search product slowly becomes more on an AI assistant who browses on the internet for you, looks at web pages and returns an answer.

It is far away from a simple search system that gives you ten blue links.

Google has been on this path for a few years now, since the search giant was recorded by the Release of OpenAi’s Chatgpt in 2022. The shift has huge implications for websites that depend on the traffic of Google and companies that buy advertisements on Google Search.

Not everyone is happy with it, but Google pushes forward.

When asked for the future of AI and search, Pichai said: “You can imagine the future with Project Astra”, a reference to the multimodal AI system of DeepMind, which can process live video of a camera or computer screen and Users ask about what can answer about what the AI sees in real time.

Google also has big plans for project Astra in other parts of his company. The company says that the multimodal AI system can set a few augmented reality -slip glasses of power on one day, for which Google will make the operating system.

Pichai also called Gemini Deep Research – an AI agent who takes a few minutes to make long research reports – as a function that could fundamentally shift how people use Google Search. Deep research automates the work that people have traditionally done with Google Search. But now it seems that Google wants to do that research for users.

“You really dramatically expand the types of user cases what searches can work for – things that are not always answered immediately, but can take some time to answer,” Pichai said. “These are all reconnaissance areas, and you will see that we will place new experiences for users in 2025 for users.”

Pichai further said that Google has a ‘clear feeling’ of the seeker experiences that could create it with another AI agents from Google, Project Mariner. That system can use the front-end of websites on behalf of users, making it not necessary for people to use websites themselves.

Google’s CEO also said that there is a “chance” to let users communicate more and ask follow -up questions with Google Search. Pichai was light on details there, but it sounds like Google Ways are considering making his search interface more like a chatbot.

‘I think the [Search] Product will evolve even more, “said Pichai. “As you make it easier for people to communicate and ask follow -up questions, etc., I think we get the chance to stimulate further growth.”

Nowadays Chatgpt has grown up to one of the most used products on the internet, with hundreds of millions of weekly users. It is an existential threat to the long -term activities of Google Search. To tackle it, Google not only builds a competitor Ai Chatbot with Gemini, but also inject AI functions directly into the search query.

The first step on the AI trip of Google Search was of course not that good. When Google AI overviews rolled out with all Google searches, the system showed inaccurate and weird AI -Hallucinations. These include answers that people told to eat stones and put glue on their pizza. At the time, Google admitted that AI overviews needed some work.

Despite this negative rollout, it seems that Google has just started looking for AI.
