With six seasons, two films and a third on the road, Downton Abbey Perhaps one of the most successful historical dramas of all time – and with good reason. The story of the Crawleys, a rich family that runs an estate in the English countryside, is full of drama at the top, romance, scandal and history. It starts in 1912 and the story continues until 1926.
The core of this PBS series is the romance between Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery), the oldest daughter of the family, and distant family member Matthew Crawley, (Dan Stevens), who becomes the heir of the estate (who is not allowed to pass on to a woman) when the previous heir dies on board the Titanic. Mary’s two younger sisters, Edith (Laura Carmichael) and Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay), also look for marriages and dare to dream larger as the rights for women begin to expand.
Downton’s staff also experiences a good part of the romantic drama, especially between Valet Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle) and Lady’s Maid Anna (Joanne Froggatt). Perhaps the most memorable character of all Lady Violet, the Snarky and Sharp downer -Gravin, played by the late, great Maggie Smith.
