Relatives secured the brothers’ release from prison after they were convicted of murdering their parents in 1996.

Prosecutors examined new evidence to decide whether the two should be sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty.

Lyle and Erik’s attorney, Mark Geragos, kicked off the press conference by saying the brothers had undergone “phenomenal rehabilitation” during their time in prison.

letter that allows abused parents to kill the Menendez brothers

Cano’s mother found a letter from Erik to her son, which was mentioned in the brothers’ lawsuit.

In 1989, the brothers – then just 18 and 21 years old – shot them fourteen times with 12-gauge shotguns in their Beverly Hills home.

They never denied the killings and instead claimed to have acted in self-defense after being sexually abused by their father.

Erik wrote: “I tried to avoid dad. It still happens Andy, but it’s worse for me now. I never know when it’s going to happen and it’s driving me crazy. Every night I stay awake thinking he might come in.

‘I have to get it out of my mind. I know what you said before, but I’m scared. You just don’t know Dad like I do. He’s crazy!’

While Cano testified that Erik spoke about his father’s abuse at age 13, prosecutors managed to prevent his testimony from being heard at the brothers’ retrial.
