‘Squid Game’ video game free for non-Netflix subscribers
Netflix is bucking the tradition of putting a paywall on its ever-growing mobile game lineup by making its upcoming “Squid Game” battle royale title available for free to non-members at launch for a “limited time.”
“Squid Game: Unleashed” debuts on December 17 ahead of the hit South Korean drama’s second season premiere and is described by the streamer as “the definitive ‘Squid Game’ video game.” No end date has been set for the “limited time” free period, but Variety has learned that the game will be offered to non-subscribers at least during the season 2 premiere of “Squid Game” on December 26.
Like Netflix’s other mobile games, “Squid Game: Unleashed” contains no ads or in-app purchases.
According to Netflix’s description for “Squid Game: Unleashed”: “Prepare for fast-paced, pulse-pounding action and ruthless competition in this multiplayer battle royale game. Play online with friends (or foes) and see if you have what it takes to last and beat all the other competitors in every damn tournament. Featuring deadly challenges from the series and more new games inspired by classic children’s activities, every round is a dark trip down memory lane. Can you make it through playtime alive?”
“’Squid Game’ is Netflix’s most-watched series ever, and we want everyone around the world to be able to participate in its return by making Unleashed available to everyone, which is a first for Netflix Games,” said Netflix Games- President Alain Tascan. . “’Squid Game: Unleashed’ is all about playing with (or against) your friends in the series’ iconic games like Glass Bridge and Red Light Green Light, so we invite everyone into the chaos this holiday season.”
The announcement that “Squid Game: Unleashed” would be free to non-Netflix members at launch was made Thursday at the Game Awards in Los Angeles, where Netflix also debuted new footage from Season 2.
