Brazilian remake ‘Panic Room’ in the works at Sony-owned Floresta

Brazilian production company Floresta, owned by Sony Pictures Television, has announced the development of its first telefilm, a Brazilian adaptation of David Fincher’s critically acclaimed 2002 thriller ‘Panic Room’.

The new version, currently in pre-production, will feature a fresh take on the thriller, with popular Brazilian actor Isis Valverde playing the lead role.

“2024 has been a challenging but generous year for me, full of possibilities, plans and projects that are finally off the drawing board,” says Valverde. Variety. “Ending this year with such great news is incredible. Being chosen to play this role is an honor, as is sharing the set with Gabriela Amaral, a truly unique director and a great team. I hope to deliver a performance full of colors that splash across the screen.”

The film adaptation, directed by Gabriela Amaral Almeida (“Friendly Beast,” “The Father’s Shadow”), follows a recently widowed woman and her young daughter as they take refuge in a secret panic room after burglars invade their home. What they don’t know is that the intruders are looking for something hidden in the room they’ve locked themselves in.

Floresta’s adaptation of ‘Panic Room’ is expected to add a new intensity to the tension of the original, while exploring current ethical dilemmas. Fincher’s original, starring Jodie Foster, was praised for its tense atmosphere and sharp direction.

More than two decades later, the original’s themes of fear, survival and family will resonate just as deeply in the Brazilian adaptation, according to the producers, who say the new version was developed with global streaming platforms in mind.

“In addition to an extremely topical plot, we have developed an exciting thriller that also involves an important ethical discussion,” says Thiago Teitelroit, Artistic Director of Fiction at Floresta. “The story, a Sony IP, matched what we were looking for: a product that allows for great performances from the cast and direction in a story that can appeal to a broad audience.”

Floresta is known for its diverse programming, including adaptations of international hits such as “Shark Tank Brazil,” “Top Chef Brazil” and “Rio Connection,” co-produced with Globo Studios and Sony Pictures Television.
