Blinks! Get ready, because Blackpink -star Lisa is getting ready to drop her solo album “Alter Ego” at the end of the month. But before that happens, there is another person who is ready to introduce the world to: her character in “The White Lotus”, Mook.
Lisa, credited in the show as Lalisa Manoban, makes her acting debut in the third season of HBO’s ‘The White Lotus’. In the Emmy-winning series by Mike White, Lisa Mook, a health of the health guru that works with guests in the Thailand Beach Resort. Van de Klok is in a romantic friendship with one of the guards of the resort, the longing Gaitok (Tayme Daphimthong).
In an interview with Variety, Lisa said that Mook is just like her: “But flirter and lady-like-I am more like a tomboy.” She discussed how she tried to fight her nerves on the first day of shooting: ‘I’m so nervous; I was sweating. I had something like that: ‘I can’t remember my rules. I am empty! “”
But Lisa turned out to be an asset to her co-star and frequent scene partner Thapthimthong, especially when it came to speak Thai. The preferred language of the actor is English, and Thai is his second language, but Dhaphimthong said that White Gautok had scripted as born and raised on Ko Samui, and never left the area. “His Thai must be very locally and authentic – she was a big help,” said DhapeThimthong. “I started to do the lines in how I normally speak Thais, and they are:” Lisa, can you help? “
That is where Lisa would intervene and reformulated sentences to ensure that the words of Gaitok were grammatically correct. She said: ‘I didn’t want him to appear as if he doesn’t sound like a local or real one. I want everything to be very natural. “
When they didn’t work, the cast would spend time together with dinners, drinks or karaoke. “Everyone would make an attempt,” said Dhaphimthong. “The Karaoke nights were fun. If I got there to sing, she would get a dance routine. “
Despite her music stuff in one of the most famous girls ‘groups in the world, Lisa said:’ I’m just shy when it comes to Karaoke. I’ll be in the back. “
Below Lisa discussed her audition for the show, playing Mook and recording this alter ego.
This is your first acting project. How was your audition process?
I am a big fan of ‘The White Lotus’ and I got this opportunity to play Mook. I had never acted before, but I’m just going to try to try it. Like, why not? I was so happy and happy that I got the role.
What is one comment Mike White gave you?
He didn’t really give us notes. He just let us do what we felt like.
I read that when you got the role, you cried with your friends and mother. Can you talk about that?
I told them after I received the call because they had no idea. They were from, “Why does she tear up like this?” So I had to tell them, and they were great supporters. I mean, they don’t really know ‘the white lotus’, but they were happy that I was part of it.
I wanted to touch what you said about Mike who gave you the freedom to discover Mook. What was your way to her and did you give her a background story?
I took some acting lessons and went through it with my teacher. It really touched my heart and I was about to cry. Mook has something in common with me. I just had this idea: how should I make Mook? But I didn’t have to do much. She is alone, but flirter and lady-like, because I am more on a tomboy in real life.
What was it like to work with the cast and work with Tayme?
I had many scenes with Tayme, and we always hung around and went through all the lines. He also helped me a lot. The crew always supported me. They were: “You are a singer, now you act – you are doing great, Lisa.”
Do you still keep in touch with each other? What’s the group cat’s name?
It’s really normal. It is called “White Lotus” cast or something. I think we should turn it into something nicer.
I would like to hear that Thai is spoken in the show. What was it like for you to speak?
It is really nice that I can speak Thais and act in a Hollywood series. It is rare. I am just so proud that I can represent my culture through this series.
What did you learn by being in the show?
So much. Everything is new to me. I am so grateful that I can work with these really supporting people. It’s like a family and I got that warmth.
What was your way of becoming character?
That Tayme sees its uniform and my uniform wearing. I was immediately mook. The uniform has certainly helped. The hair and everything made me mook.
Your upcoming solo debut will be called ‘alter ego’, and you have been introduce various personas for it – You have just introduced the audience to Kiki. How different is she from Mook?
Oh, my God. I think they are so different. I think Kiki has a more Y2K atmosphere and life. Mook is trendy, but it’s really hard to say what the differences are between kiki and mook.
Do you want to keep acting?
I absolutely want to continue to act.
Is there a genre that you would like to do?
I would like to make an action film because I feel that I am a dancer and an artist. I think I can go through all the routines and make an action film.
How did your experience in the music industry help with acting?
I don’t get camera. It was of course to be in front of the camera. But of course I think it is a huge difference between being a singer and being an actor. There are still so many things that I have to learn about this acting world journey.
When will Blackpink go on tour?
Well, we just announced our tour – it’s this year.
This interview has been edited and condensed.
