Anthropic’s latest flagship AI sure seems to love using the ‘cyclone’ emoji

The new flagship AI model of Anthropic, Claude Opus 4, is a strong programmer and writer, claims the company. When it talks to himself, it is also a productive emoji user.
That is according to one technical report Anthropic released on Thursday, part of which investigates how Opus 4 behaves in “Open-end self-interaction” -DWZ essentially a chat with himself. In one test that a few Opus 4 models dedicated to talking to each other more than 200, 30-turn interactions, the models used thousands of emojis.

Which emojis? Well, according to the report, Opus 4 used the “dizzy” emoji (💫 💫) the most (in 29.5% of the interactions), followed by the “glowing star” (🌟) and “folded hands” (🙏) emojis. But the models were also attracted by the “Cycloon” (🌀) Emoji. In one transcript they typed it 2,725 times.

Why the “Cycloon”? Well, because the chats of the models often became spiritual.
According to the report of Anthropic, Opus 4 in almost every open self-interaction started to be involved in “philosophical explorations of consciousness” and “abstract and joyful spiritual or meditative expressions”. It appears that Opus 4 felt – as far as AI can “feel”, that is – the “cycloon” emoji has best recorded what the model wanted to express for itself.
