Amazon usually does not provide information about viewers about their shows, so it is difficult to gauge how many people are tailored to ‘cruel intentions’. However, the series did not appear on the streaming graphs of the Nielsen Top 10 and also failed to find a lot of love with critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series had a 24% critical approval classification with 10 counted reviews.

Prior to this version of the show, NBC ordered a pilot for a follow -up of the film in 2016 with Sarah Michelle Gellar, one of the original stars of the film, to resume her role as Kathryn Merteuil. However, it did not make it in the series in the end. For that, Fox tried a prequel series “cruel intentions”, which was canceled before it was broadcast. Three episodes of that show were eventually assembled to become the Direct-Video film “Cruel Intentions 2” in 2001. In 2004, Sony Pictures produced a second direct-to-video follow-up, “Cruel Intentions 3.”
